22 pistol
      #245767 - 08/25/14 07:51 PM

My son, who is a senior in high school, has a birthday coming up, and I know that one thing he would love to have is a 22 pistol. I have been going back on forth on getting him one. I have a few comments and a few questions for you guys regarding this decision.

First of all - he's a great kid. No drugs. No drinking. No discipline issues. Let's just say that he did not acquire the stupid gene that I proudly displayed in my youth.

He's been around rifles and shotguns his whole life, and he and his brother and a couple of other friends will go squirrel or rabbit hunting on their own, and I have never given that a second thought. He's a responsible kid. He has shot all of my hand guns - he takes guns seriously.

My main question about having a pistol would be him transporting it. There is a conservation area just outside of town with a range, and I am sure he'd like to be able to go up there and shoot it. Or just general plinking whatever.

I realize that he can not PURCHASE a handgun, but what are the laws on him POSSESSING a handgun that I (technically) own? I realize that I can buy it and simply restrict it's use to times when I am present, but I really don't want to do that. When I give it to him, I will look at it as a sort of right of passage. I'd still require him to get my approval before he ever leaves the house with it, but other then that, I want him to have pretty much free reign with it.

So what are your thoughts? And what are the legal guidelines?

Oh and any recommendations on make/model? When I was his age, I had a Ruger single six. I loved that little sucker. It had two cylinders - 22lr and 22mag. When I was in college I'd go squirrel hunting with that thing and just have a blast. But I know he'd really love an auto-loader. Thoughts on the whole revolver/auto thing?

I'm pretty sure he can do as he wishes with it other than conceal it.

I was given a s&w model 22a as a high school graduation gift. I still have it. One of the smoothest shooting pistols I've ever shot. I have had other friends who own browning buck marks and ruger's who said my 22a was a better shooting gun.

I think redleg bought one for Zac as a graduation gift. I'm sure he'll testify to the credibility of them also.

Probably still being young, he'd have more fun and get more use out of a semi-auto than a revolver.

I say just buy him one. Sounds like he's a responsible kid.

I can't comment on the legalities, but will offer a comment on the type.Just from the current ammo situation, you can burn a lot of ammo quicker with a semi-auto.A revolver, especially SA...will slow that way down.

I'll agree with duko. Got Zach one fer graduation...I don't have any idea how many thoushands of rounds have been run thru that thing. I had a ruger semi when I was younger with the heavy barrel,,,I like this Smith WAY better. I bought the longer barrel believe it's 7 inch it has a scope rail.
ZD left it here when he moved and I have put a Simmons red dot on it,,,it's my skuirl gun...Best bang for the buck hands down

General plinking.....I like the Ruger SR22 -- easy maintenance
and decent gun IMHO

but it isn't a squirrel gun so if you are looking for a semi auto precision shooter, then it sounds like the S&W may be the way to go

Plus the S&W has a longer service record

Can't go wrong with ruger Mk3 or mk2. I competed on the Mizzou ROTC team with a mk2. Beretta neos is super accurate for the $200 price tag......just looks goofy. Don't get a ruger single six, too slow to reload. There are a bunch of 1911clones in .22, browning, colt, uramax, Chiappa, etc...that would be cool

The kicker is finding decent priced ammo for it. When the stuff comes back down to a white mans price, buy 10,000 rnds

Thanks for the input, guys. Think I'm going to be doing some shopping.

BTW - after looking into the legal issues - he can possess a long gun at any age. Can possess a hand gun at 18. He can purchase a long gun from private party or ffl at 18. Can purchase handgun from private party at 18, but ffl at 21. Has to be 21 to purchase handgun ammo.

Red

The SR 22 comes standard with 2 magazines as well.... so buying it would get you an additional magazine and the ammunition

just sayin

The important part is the young man gets what he wants to shoot

My attempt to one up everyone else is that the s&w comes with a lifetime warranty...who knows though, browning probably gives you an oar.
